Curl Up and D.I is set in the murky hinterlands of unsolved murders and soft perms. Archetypal feckless northern coppers DCI Andy Terse (Mark Benton) and DSI Gemma Detain (Katherine Kelly) are murder detectives on the mean streets of Slatby, all faded seaside glamour. The pressure is on as the capricious Chief Concern (Burn Gorman) has a rapidly mounting backlog of unsolved murders: he wants results and he wants them now.
Terse and Detain certainly look the part. They drive a quirky car, have access to tasers and know all the jargon. The only thing standing in their way of cleaning up the crime wave is the fact that they’re stupid and lazy.
Luckily for them they have help solving cases in the unlikely shape of local celebrity hairdressers and crime fiction obsessives, Yaki (Morgana Robinson) and Reuben (Vic Reeves), whose salon – A Cut Above – has accidentally become the beating-heart of operations to resolve their neglected town’s increasing crime problem.
- The Times, in its best podcasts of 2022 referred to it simply as: “Where Raymond Chandler meets Robin Hood’s Bay.”
- “Absolute laugh out loud all the way through. But not only that, beautifully observed and brilliantly written. The sitcom Camus never wrote.” Listener review
- “I made the mistake of listening to this utterly ridiculous and joyous comedy on the tube into work. I was fine until the salon scene in episode one before I was reduced to crazed hysterics and had to get off a stop early to regain my composure.” Listener review
